Education to prepare students for defense work in academe, industry and government is a primary KIMCOE goal. In addition to strong fundamentals in science and engineering, KIMCOE students progressively develop a systems perspective, an understanding of defense problems, communications skills, ability to conceptualize solutions and integrate technologies, and the ability to become flexible, team-oriented players.
Project Immersion & Networking
Summer internships and teaching laboratories let undergraduate and graduate students work on real-life national defense projects.

Case Study Approach
KIMCOE research projects use a case study approach. An overarching military scenario is used as the basis for the case study. This enables students to recognize the many facets of real life problems in these areas, and to relate to the complexity. By doing this, we create a picture of the situation in the students’ minds. They are urged to keep in mind the soldiers’ perspective. This leads students to identify essential issues, and sends them on a journey to find a solution that takes into account interactions and human behavior. It creates an active learning environment that is relevant to important and complex real life problems.
